Lyot filter

An interference filter with a very narrow wavelength passband of particular use for observing the Sun. It was devised by the French astronomer B. F. Lyot (1897-1952) in 1938. The filter consists of a sequence of plane polarizers separated by plates of quartz. By choosing the precise thickness and number of elements in the filter particular wavelengths of light can be isolated.
